**Three-way reconciliation** — A three-way reconciliation proves that the trust account's general ledger balance, the sum of all individual client ledger balances, and the adjusted bank statement balance are identical as of the same date.

North Carolina's rule is representative and unusually explicit: Rule 1.15-3(d)(1) requires that each month "the balance of the trust account as shown on the lawyer's records shall be reconciled with the current bank statement balance," and Rule 1.15-3(d)(2) requires a quarterly report reconciling the general ledger balance, "the total of all subsidiary ledger balances in the general trust account, determined by listing and totaling the positive balances in the individual client ledgers and the administrative ledger," and the adjusted bank balance computed from the statement plus outstanding deposits less outstanding checks. The client-ledger leg is the one that catches negative balances and cross-client borrowing, which a two-way bank-to-book reconciliation will not surface. Bank clients frequently request the signed quarterly reconciliation as a standing oversight artifact.
