**Itemization date** — The itemization date is the single reference date a debt collector selects — last statement, charge-off, last payment, transaction, or judgment — from which the validation notice must itemize interest, fees, payments, and credits.

Section 1006.34(b)(3) permits exactly five dates and conditions the choice on one thing: the collector must be able to ascertain the amount of the debt as of the date it picks. Section 1006.34(c)(2)(viii) then requires "an itemization of the current amount of the debt reflecting interest, fees, payments, and credits since the itemization date." Charge-off date is the common default in purchased-debt portfolios because it is the field sellers most reliably populate; last statement date is more defensible where the creditor still holds the account media.
